Calculating the volume of concrete needed for structural footings is a straightforward process based on volume geometry. To find the cubic footage of your footing, you must first convert all measurements into feet. Divide your footing width in inches by 12, and divide your footing depth in inches by 12. Once you have these decimal values, multiply them by the total continuous length of the footing in feet.
The formula is expressed as: Volume (Cubic Feet) = (Width / 12) × (Depth / 12) × Length. Because commercial concrete is ordered and delivered in cubic yards, you must convert this figure by dividing the total cubic feet by 27 (since there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard). Finally, always add a 10% waste factor to account for uneven excavation trenches, spillage, and settling.
What Affects Concrete Footing Requirements
Several real-world factors can significantly alter the actual amount of concrete your project demands compared to theoretical calculations. Soil conditions play a massive role; rough, hand-dug, or machine-excavated trenches rarely have perfectly smooth, straight walls. Loose soil can cave in or compress under the weight of wet concrete, increasing the volume required to fill the space.
Additionally, local building codes dictate the depth of footings based on the regional frost line. Footings must be placed below this line to prevent frost heaving, which can require deeper excavations and more concrete. Structural loads from the building itself determine the required width and thickness. Lastly, formwork deflection—where wooden forms bow outward under the intense hydrostatic pressure of wet concrete—can easily consume an extra 5% to 10% of material beyond your initial estimates.
